Dubai: Indian actor Mohanlal on Monday launched the "Signature Campaign" at International Modern Hospital in Dubai to launch breast cancer awareness in the UAE.

With a red marker, the actor signed his name on the giant white board to pledge his support in the fight against breast cancer.

Globally, October is observed as Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the world for women, and in the UAE, it is the second biggest killer of females after cardiovascular disease, according to health figures.

“Early detection is the key to fight breast cancer," said Dr. Hafeez Rahman, chairman of International Modern Hospital, which is offering women free consultation with its breast cancer specialist throughout October.

If breast cancer is detected early, the survival rate is 98 per cent.

Dr. Sailesh Matkar, head of the Pink Fern Breast Cancer Center at International Modern Hospital, said women should be aware of the importance of breast self-examination.

"A change in lifestyle and exercise including maintaining a healthy diet is one of the key factors to prevent breast cancer,” Matkar added.
