If you haven’t caught up yet, this month is all about the ’tache. Yes, it’s Movember, where every man worth his salt — or at least those genetically inclined — grow moustaches to raise awareness for men’s health issues, particularly prostrate cancer.

Dubai-based artist and jewellery designer Nadine Kanso, of Bil Arabi fame, partnered with male grooming lounge 1847 to carefully select a few stylish subjects in the UAE and photographed them in various stages of their Movember ’taches. The result is an exhibition, called Movember Moments, that will be hosted at Iris Dubai at the Oberoi for the entire month.

“When I was invited to work on this project, I knew that it was going to be something unique and special,” says Kanso. “I wanted to be part of an initiative and contribute to raising awareness on men’s health. It was a great experience to collaborate with such a dynamic and passionate group of men, who were also keen on supporting this cause.”

The subjects include fashion designer Rami Al Ali, furniture designer Khalid Sha’afar, branding consultant Khatchig MiKaelian and fashion blogger and former professional footballer Andy Scott.

We at The Directory went a step further, we asked Mohammad Mahmoud Ijbarah, the barber at 1847 how you can achieve these looks and do Movember in style.

Andy Scott: The Under Cover Brother

This is a pretty straightforward shave. The key is to let the upper-lip facial hair grow out for a few weeks before mastering the desired moustache look. Before starting to trim, always remember to start with a hot towel to open up the pores. This will give you the fresh look you desire. Finish off with an aftershave.

Khatchig MiKaelian: The Trucker

One of the most recognised moustache shapes, this style can be pretty itchy so make sure you wash your face regularly to avoid irritation of the skin. For this look, it’s always best to apply Alum block prior to the trim in order to protect the skin from nicks. Try to grow it out and wait a few months before starting to trim. This look works well for a man with a bigger face. To add a more serious look, throw in some long sideburns.

Rami Al Ali: The Artist

For a more classic yet stylish trim like this look, apply pre-shave oil before lathering the skin in a gentle cream to soften the facial hair to get the perfect ends. To get this crisp, perfectly trimmed and clean look, whiskers past the edge of the lip must go. You can also add wax to the edges and swoop them upward to style further. This look works well for men with a narrow and defined bone structure.

Khalid Sha’afar: Chevron

Usually a little wide and covering the top border of the lips, this moustache has a slight twist on the classic shave. After carefully trimming the facial hair to perfection, follow with rose water and a post-shave balm to minimise irritation and replenish moisture levels.

*Movember Moments by Nadine Kanso is being exhibited at Iris Dubai from November 11 to 30.
