It’s getting hot out there. To make sure you’re on top of your fashion game — because fashion has no off days — here are all the pieces you should start thinking of investing in.

1. Acid-washed denim jeans

Designers are often inspired by music and movements in culture, and for Spring/Summer 2017 we’ve seen a re-emergence of the punk. This season opt for a pair of distressed jeans, either ripped, faded, bleached or acid washed, a look that can be a little strong even for a dedicated follower of fashion. Gucci and Saint Laurent’s latest collections offer some fantastic options that give you just the right amount of rock ‘n’ roll attitude without making you look like a groupie.

2. Camp-collar printed cotton shirt

Carrying on where we left off last summer, you’ll no doubt be delighted to hear that billowing, short-sleeved shirts in colourful prints are still key for this summer. Perfectly embodying the flamboyant sensibility associated with the swinging 1960s, these fun and breezy shirts are perfect for wearing from day to night.

3. Camouflage-print cotton-jersey T-shirt

Camouflage returns once again this spring, with brands such as Dries Van Noten and Valentino spearheading this category well. The general idea of camouflage is a mishmash of overlapping layers in subtly different colours and textures, which is applied to outerwear, T-shirts, knitwear and accessories this season, making this print extremely wearable whether you want to wear a hint or make a statement.

4. Suede bomber jacket

This summer we are seeing a renewed popularity of vintage-style jackets. Invest in a brightly coloured leather or suede bomber one, such as this 1970s-inspired, burgundy bomber from Ermenegildo Zegna. It’s the kind of jacket you could imagine hanging off the shoulder of a style icon such as Steve McQueen. Think of it as the leather jacket’s lighter, more tactile cousin, perfect for those in-between months when the weather can’t seem to make up its mind.

5. Slim-fit suit jacket and trousers

One of the most impactful pieces to add to your wardrobe this summer is a statement suit. This season’s collections provide plenty of opportunity to do this by introducing integrating variations in colour and texture. Lanvin’s over-dyed suit in a rich, deep burgundy is a fantastic alternative for summer wedding attire. Brunello Cucinelli, Richard James and Berluti all offer summer suiting in different fabric blends and colourways.

6. Leather and canvas sandals

This summer, chunky sports sandals are an essential summer shoe, offering versatility — you can wear them to the beach or with tailored shorts on balmy days in the city. These Want Les Essentiels sandals completely reinvent a once much-maligned style, with brands such as Prada and Dries Van Noten offering a broader range of types.

7. Cotton-Gabardine overshirt

Designers often look to military attire for inspiration and this summer is no different with the resurgent popularity of military and utilitarian-style overshirts and parkas. Originally developed by the US Army as an outer layer to be worn by GIs, they were later adopted as everyday pieces by the fashion movement. Overshirts are great key investment pieces as they provide year-round wearability and can be substituted for a light jacket in the spring and layered over knitwear and under a coat in the winter.
