The first time I decided to make a dramatic change to my hair was also the first time I had my first hair disaster. I wanted my very long hair to be turned into a punk-y, feathered bob, but what I got was an uneven mess that I shed a few tears over.
When I was invited to get a cut from the newly appointed style director at JetSet salon, Simone Resta, I knew this was a chance to try something dramatic again. When else would I get a chance to get a chop from someone who has also touched the lush locks of Mariah Carey?
Resta, who was born and raised in Italy, joined JetSet three months ago after working in London for nine years. He brings with him a love for the craft of hairdressing — he started cutting hair at the age of 15 — and is known for his contemporary, angular cuts.
During my consultation with Resta, he was enthusiastic about the pictures I saved on my phone to illustrate a slightly layered bob with a choppy fringe. He loved the idea and offered suggestions based on the shape of my face and my hair routine.
After a quick hair wash, Resta pulls out his special Japanese shears and gets started on my hair. He’s chatty and open, and we are laughing together in no time. He is precise with each cut, even if it means poking and prodding my head into different angles. When the time comes for the piece de resistance — the fringe — he is calm and steady handed, trimming a little here and a little there in complete silence. Uneven bangs will completely kill any haircut, but Resta takes his time with it and gets it right.
Eschewing a generic blow dry, he suggests going for a natural look. After scrunching in a generous helping of mousse into my hair, he has me tip my head over and starts drying my hair upside down with a diffuser. It must have been a funny sight (I personally have never seen any hairdresser do this) but it leaves my hair super bouncy; I had never seen my hair so curly before.
My hair is completely different from how it was two hours ago without a disastrous mess in sight. Resta gave me a cut that both suited me and was edgy and different — just the way I wanted.
