It seemed like just yesterday that we were predicting the beauty trends for 2017, and here we are at the end of a year that has been a lot of fun in terms of beauty and make-up. However, some trends were better than other. A few, we hope, are thrown in the trash before 2018 begins. Here we look at the best and the worst from this year.

Funny eyebrows

When a make-up artist from Finland posted a picture on Instagram, featuring a new look she had created, little did she know she was going to viral. Stella Sironen’s feather brows got everyone in a huff, lamenting “kids these days” and their crazy trends. While her post was a joke and was actually admired by a lot of people, it triggered a domino effect of funny brow trends that got people (who were obviously not in the loop) more and more riled up. I say, more creative, the better!

Innovative eye make-up

Now that everyone’s a beauty blogger, there are approximately 1 billion make-up looks (very rough estimate) floating around on the internet. While a lot of them are full-on glamorous and borderline wedding make-up looks, there are some people doing unique things with eyeshadows and eyeliners that are reminiscent of abstract, edgy runway styles. These looks are definitely not for everyone, but it’s nice to see people challenge themselves to do cool, new things that aren’t typically pretty.

Unusual lip colours

Wearing blue lipstick in 2010 might have classified you as part of a punk or emo subculture. In 2017, blue (or purple, or green) is just another shade in make-up lines from mainstream brands such as Kat Von D Beauty, Fenty Beauty and Urban Decay. While I don’t have the guts to wear navy blue lipstick just yet, I love that trends are moving to more creative places.

Unicorns

For a mythical creature, unicorns sure do get around. This is a trend brands know they can use for a little sales boost. It has instant appeal with the multitude of unicorn-obsessed people in the world. For me, it’s a hard pass. Nothing about this glorified horse will make me buy shiny, glittery make-up brushes, eyeshadow palettes or accessories. Here’s hoping unicorns stay where they belong; out of this world.

Glitter/holographic

Speaking of glitter, this is one trend I can get on board with. We saw glitter and holographic tints in everything from lip glosses, lipsticks, eyeshadows, loose pigments, face highlighter (both in powder and super saturated liquid form), primers and eye liners. That’s a lot of sparkle. We welcome it and hope it carries into the new year.

Diversity

The need for representation of minority groups in beauty has never been more relevant and important as it is now. While a few make-up brands have always stocked foundation shades and other make-up items for darker skin tones, it was Rihanna’s Fenty Beauty line that went the extra mile by not only getting things like undertone right, but by also employing models who were bold, beautiful and of various shades. There is still a lot of work to be done to boost under-represented groups, but 2017 has been a good start. We hope 2018 brings more diversity in beauty, including that of age.
