Wearing sunscreen is the flossing of beauty. It’s something that you know is good for you, but it’s far too annoying to actually do. I call it annoying because of the texture of most sunscreens makes you want to avoid it. It can be thick, oily and feel like a mask over the skin.

To find a sunscreen that wasn’t so annoying, I put a couple of products to the test. Welcome to the battle of the sunscreens.

Nuxe Sun Fondant Cream for Face SPF 50

This cream has a thick consistency and a sweet, pleasant smell. The formula applies very smoothly onto the skin and does not leave a white cast, which some sunscreens are guilty of doing. After a few hours my face did feel greasy, so I would not recommend it for oily skin. However, it’s very moisturising and my face felt nice and soft after washing it off. This would work like a dream on dry skin. 2.5/5 (Dh119)

Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunscreen SPF 45

This product is an oldie but a goodie. It’s easy to find in supermarkets and isn’t very expensive. The consistency of the cream is not too light and not too heavy. It blends really easily, but on my tan skin did need a bit of work to get rid of the white cast. It dries quickly and I didn’t feel it on my face even after wearing it for hours. 4/5

Shiseido Expert Sun Aging Protection Lotion SPF 50

Even though the version I tried is for the body, I found that it worked well for the face as well. It’s a thin fluid that really needs to be worked into the skin, but dries down to almost a matte finish. This one has a bit of white cast, so watch out for that if you have dark skin. It’s also supposed to be very water resistant, making it perfect for the beach. 3/5 (Dh213)

Clarins UV Plus Anti-Pollution Sunscreen SPF 50

The first time I tried this sunscreen I had no plans on wearing it with foundation, but I had to powder my face because of how ashy I looked. No amount of blending could take off the white cast, which was a pity because of how excellent this product is. The cream is very watery and a small amount can be used over a large area. It was light on the skin and dried to matte finish that I could barely feel. It would suit lighter skin tones; those with darker skin tones might need a bit of foundation to make it work. The price point for just 30ml also makes me cringe a little. 3.5/5 (Dh221)
