In a celebrity endorsement move timed to coincide with Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton’s historic nomination, a bounty of famous actors and singers released a buoyant new music video of them singing a cappella to Rachel Platten’s Fight Song.
Featuring Elizabeth Banks, Sia, Alan Cumming, Aisha Tyler, Connie Britton, America Ferrera, Billy Porter, Eva Longoria, Idina Menzel, Jaime King, Jane Fonda, Julie Bowen, Kathy Najimy and dozens of others, the clip was released the morning after the former secretary of State, senator and First Lady made history by becoming the first female presidential nominee of a major American political party.
The video was Banks’ brainchild through the comedic actress and Pitch Perfect producer’s WhoHaha platform, whose mission is to celebrate funny women. Banks rallied many of her peers from the movie Pitch Perfect, as well as creators across disciplines, to stump for Clinton.
Platten’s song was released in 2015 and peaked at No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, and in the interim it’s taken on a life of its own. Clinton frequently warms up crowds at her rallies with the song, but its message on the power of determination makes it a perfect fit for any sort of competitive sport, be it presidential politics or high school volleyball.
In a 2015 interview with ABC News, Platten explained the genesis of her inspirational anthem: “When I wrote Fight Song, I was in a particular low point,” she said. “I needed to remind myself to not give up, that I still believed in myself and that I still had fight left.”
Platten added that she didn’t write it for the world to hear. “I wrote it ‘cause I needed it. And I wrote it ‘cause I needed that reminder and I needed hope.”
