The trailer of Tamil film Sathriyan opens with a dialogue that translates into-“A knife is dual edged, it kills the person at whom it is directed and also kills the person holding it.” Do we need to say more that it’s a gangster story. Written and directed by S.R. Prabhakaran, Sathriyan features Vikram Prabhu in the lead role of Guna, a gangster. Prabhakaran’s story is based on the life of a close friend’s brother who took to the knife. While the real life story was based in Madurai, Prabhakaran’s film is based in Trichy. And, he also met a real gangster to gather inputs for his script and screenplay. So is this another story soaked in gore and violence? “The censor board appreciated the film for narrating a gangster tale without displaying gore,” said Vikram Prabhu. Sathriyan, though a gangster tale, is different in its presentation. Besides, it subtly conveys a message — What happens when one man takes power in his hands and the consequences. An actor who believes in submitting himself to his director, Vikram Prabhu relied completely on the research done by Prabhakaran. Sathriyan is not only about rowdyism. There are tender moments in the love between Guna and Niranjana, the daughter of another rowdy.

Manjima Mohan, who debuted last year in Tamil cinema with Gautham Menon’s Achcham Yenbadhu Madamaiyada, is paired opposite Vikram Prabhu. The supporting cast includes Kavin, Rio Raja, Aishwarya Dutta, Soundararaja, Aruldoss, Sharath Lohitashwa, Naren (of Aadukalam fame) and Yogi Babu. Sivakumar Vijayan handled the camera. Yuvan Shankar Raja is the music composer.

Prabhakaran, who began his film career with the hit film, Sundarapandian promises that Sathriyan will be a good blend of a commercial story and realistic cinema.
