Vikram Prabhu, who began his career with the film Kumki playing an elephant trainer, explores another challenging character in upcoming Tamil film Neruppuda.

He plays a firefighter in this story written by journalist-turned-filmmaker B Ashok Kumar.

While many stories about the police-force have been made in Tamil, it’s the first time anyone has come up with a tribute to firemen.

Neruppuda, set in Kannagi Nagar Housing Board Colony of Chennai, follows the lives of five buddies who harbour dreams of becoming firefighters. Vikram Prabhu plays Guru. Guru’s friends are played by Varun, Vincent, Rajkumar and debutant Dinesh.

For Kumar, a former video-journalist with CNN-IBN, an incident from his life sparked off this story and became the turning point that marked his change of career.

Kumar says the research involved discussions with the fire-service personnel who guided them on the right techniques and were present during the filming, making it an accident-free experience.

He appreciates Prabhu’s involvement who did not hesitate to do the role that came with its share of risks.

A large portion of the fire scenes was filmed live and we have not used computer graphics, adds director Kumar.

The film is also a love story, with Nikki Galrani paired opposite Prabhu. Galrani plays Vasumathi, a medical student in the story. Ponvannan is playing Prabhu’s on-screen father.

“Post Neruppuda, viewers will understand the heroism of firemen, the silent heroes, who put their lives at stake to rescue others,” said Kumar. “Besides, it will show the residents of Kannagi Nagar in a better light and not for their notorious activities.”

Sean Rolden has composed music. RD Rajashekar is the DOP.

Neruppuda, releasing in the UAE on September 7, also marks Prabhu’s foray into production, under his banner First Artist.
