Tamil director Samuthrakani’s films are eagerly awaited.

The versatile actor and a director with a conscience is ready with Thondan (a person who volunteers to help another), his 11th directorial venture, releasing in UAE on May 26.

Scripted by Samuthrakani, Thondan follows the journey of an ambulance driver and his medical attendant. Samuthrakani plays the driver, Maha Vishnu, and Vikranth is the attendant Vicky.

The duo interacted with people working for Tamil Nadu’s emergency hotline 108 to understand their roles better.

“Some who work here are former truck drivers who opted to join 108, said Samuthrakani who worked under the late K. Balachander.

“They are trained to deal with emergencies en route.”

Samuthrakani believes in making films with a social message and often relies on his collection of newspaper cuttings while writing his script.

In Thondan he has woven in incidents that were reported in dailies. There is a reference to an incident that occurred in broad daylight in Erode where a young man entered a college and using the broken leg of a chair clubbed a young woman to death.

“He then walked out as the other students watched helplessly. What if one of the girls had stood up to him?”

More real-life issues that people have become indifferent to are talked about in Thondan.

Sunaina is paired opposite Samuthrakani. The supporting cast includes Thambi Ramiah, Ganja Karuppu, Soori and Namo Narayana.

Thondan is produced by R. Manikandan.
