Madhoosudhan, a software professional, believes that brains can do the trick when it comes to solving any issue, and that if employed smartly, brains can win over brawn.

Tamil director Gaurav Narayanan explores this idea in his new film, Ippadai Vellum, which features Udhayanidhi Stalin and Manjima Mohan in the lead. This is Narayanan’s third film, after Thoonganagaram and Sigaram Thodu. Stalin plays Madhusoodhan and veteran actress Radhika is his onscreen mother.

The highlight is the engaging screenplay, Narayanan said, who devoted a year and a half for writing the story. Characters have been sketched with care.

“Every character is linked with the other. Viewers will be riveted to the screen and the speedy narration will not allow them to even pick up their popcorn. It’s an edge-of-the-seat thriller.”

A social issue has been addressed, he added — “something that is part of our daily life and if wrongly used how it can lead to an unwanted situation.”

Weaving romance into his tale Narayanan has also touched on women empowerment. Mohan plays a software engineer, an intelligent woman. Actress Radhika trained and drove a bus carrying 200 people for a scene.

Shot in Chennai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Pondicherry and Oman, Ippadai Vellum has actors RK Suresh and Daniel Balaji playing the antagonists. Balaji, who has three different looks in the film, said that he does not commit himself to many villain roles, as they are the usual. ‘But this villain is different, he barely talks.”

Look out for comedian Soori’s track. Soori is not the hero’s side-kick but has a role running parallel to Madhusoodhan’s life, said Narayanan.

D Imman is the music composer. Richard M Nathan is the cinematographer.

Produced by Lyca Productions, Ippadai Vellum releases in the UAE on November 9.
