When Swati marries Arun, one of the gifts she brings home to her in-laws is an alamaara, a wooden cupboard.

What happens in the household with the arrival of this piece of furniture is narrated with humour in the movie Alamaara, said director Midhun Manuel Thomas.

Sunny Wayn and Adithi Ravi play the lead roles of Arun and Swati, two bank employees from Bengaluru.

“This story besides talking about the customs associated with marriage in Kerala also touches on the subtle things in a relationship,” added Thomas, who began his cinematic journey as script-writer for the romantic comedy, Om Shanti Oshana.

He next took the directorial plunge with Aadu-Oru Bheegara Jeeviyanu and his last was another comedy, Annmariya Kalippilannu.

For model-turned-actor Ravi, Swati is her first lead role. Ravi has played minor roles in a few films earlier. She describes Swati as a girl next door.

“Alamaara is a film that many newly married couples will connect to,” said Ravi.

The supporting cast includes Aju Verghese, Saiju Kurup, Renji Panicker and Seema G. Nair.

Appreciating the work of Panicker and Seema as “something out of the box”, Thomas said, “I enjoyed working with them.” Manikandan who won this year’s Kerala state award for Kammattipadam will be seen in a completely different avatar in this story.

“He plays Arun’s ammavan [uncle] but is his buddy as well. He not only resolves issues for Arun but sometimes creates havoc too,” he said.

Alamaara is a fun film for the family,” Thomas said.

Alamaara releases in the UAE on March 16.
