Malayalam director Abrid Shine latest film Poomaram is based on the annual Mahatma Gandhi University Youth Festival.

Releasing in India to an overwhelming response, Poomaram launches Kalidas Jayaram in the lead as an adult (he won the country’s National Award as a child actor for the film Ente Veedu Appuvinteyum).

Shine, who bowled over the audience with his debut film 1983 and subsequently proved that he was here to stay with his second film Action Hero Biju (a policeman’s tale), takes on a larger canvas this time. With a multitude of characters played out by a team of newcomers, Poomaram is a film to watch out for, say critics.

Jayaram Junior plays the chairman of a college Union, while newcomer Neeta Pillai marks her debut as Irene, the chairperson of a women’s college and the defending champions.

Pillai’s natural acting is already the talk of the town.
