As actress Parvathy, known for her Malayalam hits, gears up for a Hindi debut, Gulf News tabloid! picked her brain about Qarib Qarib Singlle, where she stars opposite award-winning actor Irrfan Khan.
Parvathy has featured in Malayalam blockbusters including the romantic comedy Bangalore Days, the war drama Take Off and the romance Ennu Ninte Moideen.
For those who aren’t familiar with South Indian cinema, Parvathy is considered a rising star who can hold her own against big names such as Dulquer Salmaan and Prithviraj.
Here are excerpts from our interview.
What can you tell us about Jaya and Qarib Qarib Singlle?
The story is about this woman who is exploring this journey of self-discovery. The toughest bit about Jaya is that she isn’t superhuman. She’s an ordinary woman, so the biggest challenge to was to be real and not act. This film is relevant in today’s times. We explore the questions surrounding relationships and the tags or labels that are given to it. Questions such as, ‘what does being committed to one another mean?’ are explored keeping this day and age in mind. Why there is a need to put relationships in categories, or where has love gone, are also looked into. Sometimes, the actual feeling of loving someone takes a backseat because we are busy defining it. The film asks all those questions.
It sounds deep...
But it isn’t a philosophical film. We explore if happiness in relationships is derived through complete surrender or does it come when you explore the possibility of being with someone with an open mind.
How did this role come to you and did you have an accent coach for this film?
In the past, I had received one or two Hindi film offers. But I was in no hurry to be launched in the traditional sense. For me, it’s just about being a part of good cinema. That was the high I was looking for. Plus, the role of Jaya was a dream come true. Regarding [speaking] Hindi, I studied in Kendriya Vidyalaya [government school] and I had several Northy [North Indian] friends. So I am not that bad. With regards to my character Jaya, I wasn’t required to have a proper North Indian accent, but I was guided when required. But in all honesty, I don’t appreciate the mocking of South Indian’s Hindi accent in Hindi films though.

All I needed to do was be present at the moment and react. He’s sincere and brilliant,” said Parvathy, when asked about her experience of working with Irrfan Khan.
