A boutique in Jumeirah that stocks Pakistani designers was bursting at its seams on the evening of March 29 as dozens of ladies waited for heart-throb Fawad Khan — for two hours. The Pakistani actor only made an appearance at 8.15pm. Something told us that it wasn’t his wife Sadaf Khan’s collections at the Ensemble boutique that had them hooked for so long.

“It’s a source of pride that they take time out for him and that they have been battling traffic for an hour to see him. It’s humbling, but maybe he can answer that question better… [I]am used to this, even as young musician he was very popular,” said Sadaf.

Just like the women outside, she was waiting patiently for him at the store.

Around 8.15pm, a commotion and a rock star welcome signalled his appearance, and he walked in looking flustered at making his fans and the media wait.

His earnest face and his string of apologies made his tardiness less painful.

So how does the sight of all the ladies waiting for him outside the door make him feel?

“Very scared,” said Fawad, to which his wife retorted: “scared of the wife, you mean”.

They both laughed easily and it was clear that these high school sweethearts wore fame and adulation effortlessly.

While Fawad looked sharp in a blue blazer, he made it clear that his wife was the force behind their fashion venture. His endorsement and appearance at the store was simply to boost its profile.

“Also, women seek approval of men and you want to often hear compliments from them,” said Sadaf, adding that she often looks to him for fashion advice when it comes to her own fashion choices. The feeling isn’t one-sided.

“I also look up to her fashion sensibility and her clothes reflect the trends and we take great pride in it,” said Fawad. Both aren’t involved in the collection’s creation, but have a team in Pakistan who design the clothes.

But while they aren’t involved in the designing process, the couple believe that it is never a good idea to follow trends blindly.

“Trends shouldn’t dictate what you wear. Choose silhouettes that suit your body type. So if you are broad, then skinny suits and slim pants may not work, or if you are boxy, then double-breasted suits are a bad idea. It’s all about what looks good on you,” said Fawad.

While the question of Pakistani actors ban in Bollywood was off the table, the couple was happy to answer questions about how they met.

“Our love story happened in the most cheesiest of [ways]. I am the one who made the first move and I was rejected. Soon after that, it [courtship] happened at a tuition centre. I was this film launda [boy] seeking a girl out … Very soon, I might be selling the rights of my love story to Bollywood,” said Fawad with a laugh.

But it’s music, not movies, that’s dominating his life right now.

“My journey [in show business] started with my band. So life has come full circle and I will be going back to music,” said Fawad.
