Actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan says there is no nudity or kissing in her upcoming film Ae Dil Hai Mushkil.

The steaming chemistry between Ranbir Kapoor and Rai Bachchan is one of the most widely discussed aspects of Karan Johar’s much talked about film.

“Saba Khan is a character which has been projected in a very classy, elite and dignified manner. She has a huge impact on Ayan’s [Kapoor] life,” said Rai Bachchan on Saturday at the MAMI film festival in Mumbai.

“It is her attitude that made her an attractive woman. We did not intend to show skin, liplocks or frivolous sensuality on screen. It is about the relationship between Saba and Ayan.”

The film marks the first time the actress has worked with her old friend Johar.

“I am so fortunate to play a character like Saba. I never met a woman like Saba before... So as an actress, it was a fulfilling experience for me to essay a character like this,” said Rai Bachchan.

The actress was asked if there was any rivalry between her and her co-star, Anushka Sharma.

“Well, we did not have many scenes together, [except] one very crucial scene where Saba, Ayan and Alizeh come together. Why should we have any problem or insecurity? We were good,” she replied.

“There is no kissing scene or skin show. It is about the attitude. There was a news piece that Censor Board has given some cuts on the Aishwarya track. There is no lip lock. It’s just in the eyes and attitude and that’s where an actor comes in,” said Johar said. He called Rai Bachchan “a poetess in the film”.

“She is a woman of substance in every which way. She knows her mind and heart. We were honest to the film and the story. What you see on screen is glimpse of that character. Not for a second was I apologetic about it,” Johar said.

“She is clear about her decisions. I knew the dignity that Aishwarya brings to every character. So, you don’t look at it and question about supposed lack of decency as it’s always elegant. To me this is the woman who knows herself and the [scenes] have to be done in certain way,” he said.

Ae Dil Hai Mushkil releases in the UAE on October 27.
