Hulu has landed Little Fires Everywhere, a limited series starring Reese Witherspoon and Kerry Washington based on the book of the same name.

Witherspoon’s company Hello Sunshine will produce the series — its first venture as a studio — along with Washington’s Simpson Street and ABC Signature Studios.

Celeste Ng’s novel Little Fires Everywhere follows “picture-perfect” Elena Richardson and a newcomer to her Cleveland suburb, the enigmatic Mia Warren. As Elena’s children become drawn to Mia and her daughter, Pearl, Elena becomes determined to uncover Mia’s mysterious past.

The TV series will explore “the weight of secrets, the nature of art and identity, the ferocious pull of motherhood — and the danger in believing that following the rules can avert disaster,” Hulu said in the announcement on Monday.

Witherspoon founded Hello Sunshine in 2016 to showcase female-driven stories. She stars in Disney’s new film A Wrinkle in Time, and she starred in and executive produced HBO’s female-driven Big Little Lies.

Witherspoon and Lauren Neustadter, head of film and television for Hello Sunshine, read Ng’s Little Fires Everywhere before it was published and brought it to Washington, Hulu said. The two actresses then approached Liz Tigelaar, showrunner of the Hulu series Casual, to adapt and run the limited series.

Tigelaar, Washington, Witherspoon and Neustadter will be executive producers of Little Fires Everywhere. Ng will be a producer on the series.

“I am floored to have the opportunity to work alongside Reese Witherspoon exploring the rich themes of this story playing these dynamic characters,” Washington said in a statement.
