Those who have watched Malayalam film Honey Bee will remember Sebastian aka Seban (Asif Ali) and Angel (Bhavana), the young pair in love who, to escape the wrath of Angel’s brothers, jump into the sea.

Honey Bee 2 rescues them from their suicide attempt.

Now Angel’s elder brother, Michael (Lal Sr.), consents to their marriage but Seban is not sure if his parents will agree to the match.

Seban’s parents, Thambi Antony (Sreenivasan) and Ruby (Lena), are distinguished lawyers. Thambi is disappointed with his son’s acting dreams, the reason why Seban left home. Besides, Seban feels Angel’s family, the ‘Punyalans’ comprising of her uncouth and tough brothers, will never be accepted by his parents.

How do the Punyalans convince Thambi Antony with a marriage proposal for Seban and Angel?

Directed by Jean Paul (Lal Jr.) this is an entertainer with laugh-out-loud moments brought by slapstick comedy and adult humour mostly centred around Seban’s friends, Ferno (Baburaj), Abu (Sreenath Bhasi) and Ambru (Balu Verghese).

As Seban goes through a guilt trip for deceiving his parents, his relationship with Angel suffers. The first half entertains but the second half gets unexciting.

Characters like Ferno’s mother, his stepfather, and the student chef, who is hired for the wedding make it a tedious experience with their inane comedy.

The good moments in the story are the scenes between Seban’s parents. Lena is a natural, her Ruby is graceful. Veteran Sreenivasan does not disappoint. When Michael visits Thambi’s house with the marriage proposal, he recognises his old buddy of college days and shouts: ‘Did you come here to grope my sister in the guise of singing carols?’

The confusion on Thambi’s face is perfectly captured by Sreenivasan — a mix of shock and surprise.

The sequel may not live up to the first part, yet Honey Bee 2 has its fun moments too.
