As Bollywood buckles this summer under the threat of films being leaked online, Australian bowler Brett Lee, who plays the lead role in the cross-cultural romance UnIndian, preempted that menace and lent his weight to an anti-piracy campaign last year.

“We don’t want leaks. The only leaks I have found are the leaks in my farmhouse. In this campaign, I thank everyone for not stealing films. The campaign makes you aware that hundreds of workers worked on that film and to please respect them,” said Brett Lee in an interview with tabloid! in Dubai on Monday.

Lee is a part of a 30-second video, led by UnIndian director and anti-piracy advocate Anupam Sharma, to make people aware of the hard work that goes into making a film and hails all those who access content through legitimate sources . The anti-piracy clip, shot on the set of UnIndian, puts a face to its crew, including its writers, costume designers and make-up artists.

So far, the romantic comedy which released in Sydney last year, hasn’t been leaked online.

Recently, Hindi film producers and directors have been facing the threat of their films being leaked online. Drug drama Udta Punjab and sex comedy Great Grand Masti were available for online viewing before their theatrical release.

UnIndian, directed by Sharma, will see Lee make his acting debut in a lead role.

“Playing cricket feels comfortable. But in acting you are putting yourself out there,” said Lee.

He plays a teacher in Australia who falls in love with a “sundar ladki” (a beautiful Indian woman), played by Tannishtha Chatterjee.

“This film shows that there are no boundaries in love. You will laugh a lot and cry a bit. It shows that the skin colour, hair or eye colour doesn’t matter. You cannot help who you fall in love with... I promise you will walk out of the cinema with a smile on your face,” said Lee. The cross-cultural romance will releases in the UAE on August 18.
