Netflix announced on Wednesday a return to Camp Firewood and a new original series based on the 2001 film Wet Hot American Summer.
Inspired by the final scene from the film, set in 1981, in which the counsellors of a fictional summer camp gather together and vow to meet up again in 10 years, Wet Hot American Summer: Ten Years Later will make good on that promise and check in on campers and counsellors alike.
Set in 1991, the series will feature eight new 30-minute episodes written by creators Michael Showalter and David Wain.
This is the second series Netflix has produced featuring the characters from Wet Hot American Summer, with prequel Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp debuting in 2015.
The original film boasted a cast of comedic heavyweights, many of whom went on to superstardom, including Amy Poehler, Paul Rudd and Bradley Cooper. First Day of Camp featured nearly all of the original film’s cast and introduced even more Hollywood elite into its ranks, with Jon Hamm, Chris Pine and Kristen Wiig all making appearances.
Though the 2001 film was both a critical and commercial failure, pulling in under $300,000 at the box office, it found new life with a cult audience, and First Day of Camp drew kind reviews upon its release.
No casting announcements have been made yet, but fans can hope that all their favourites will again reunite.
Wet Hot American Summer: Ten Years Later is scheduled to premiere in 2017.
