Some of the awards season’s biggest films have been added to the line-up at this year’s Dubai International Film Festival.

The 13 titles now being screened in the Cinema of the World programme include works by Kim Ki-duk, Ken Loach and Terrence Malick and a much-awaited reteaming of Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone.

Damien Chazelle’s La La Land is a modern Hollywood romance with song and dance performances we can’t wait to see Gosling and Stone execute. Malick’s Voyage of Time tells the history of our planet in a film narrated by Cate Blanchett and produced by Brad Pitt.

British director Loach is renowned for his social dramas, and I, Daniel Blake (which won the Palme d’Or at Cannes in May) is no different, following the friendship of a middle-aged carpenter and a young single mother who are both shoved around by the state welfare system.

Anything by South Korean auteur Kim is a must-see. In The Net, a poor North Korean fisherman drifts into South Korean waters.

“The Cinema of The World category boasts such a broad range of work from different cultures, and allows us the opportunity to give audiences a film experience they may not otherwise have access to. Seeing people enjoy something new and different through the magic of cinema is one of the most rewarding things about Diff,” said Cinema of The World ddirector Nashen Moodley.

Other films added to the line-up are:

Mockumentary King of the Belgians by Jessica Woodworth and Peter Brosens.

Turkish director Zeki Demirkubuz (a former Muhr AsiaAfrica winner for Inside) with Ember.

The Distinguished Citizen by Mariano Cohn and Gastón Duprat.

Portuguese director Marco Martins’ Saint George.

Indian filmmakers Shirley Abraham and Amit Madheshiya’s The Cinema Travellers.

British director William Oldroyd’s Lady Macbeth.

Chadian director Mahamat-Saleh Haroun’s non-fiction feature Hissein Habre, A Chadian Tragedy.

Sami Blood by Swedish director Amanda Kernell.

Russian director Aleksey Mizgirev’s The Duelist.
