Could Ryan Gosling’s character, Officer K, be good ol’ Deckard’s son?

The upcoming sci-fi sequel Blade Runner 2049 picks up 30 years down the line from Ridley Scott’s cult classic Blade Runner (1982), and features a chiselled Gosling as Officer K, seeking out a weathered and wary Deckard (Ford) for answers.

Thirty years is ample time for Deckard to have had a kid (if that’s even a possibility for the character, who may or may not be human). Can audiences expect a father-son relationship from the two — figuratively or literally?

“Yeah, but it’s in reverse,” Gosling joked to Gulf News tabloid! during a press junket in Berlin.

“I had his job once. I was good at it,” Ford joined in, mimicking his character’s line from the trailer.

Ford was iconic as the original Blade Runner, a special police operative who was forced to hunt down replicants — genetically engineered replicas of human beings — to ‘retire’ them, or put an end to their volatile lives. The film was set in 2019, while the second will take place in 2049.

Keeping mum about the possibility of being Gosling’s on-screen dad, Ford added: “I think that’s part of what we want to preserve, is the audience’s potential not to hear it either from me, as a hawker of my wares, or from you as a journalist, but [let] them have the opportunity to in-context discover these things.

“My most critical script note in the margins is, ‘Talk story’. We’re talking about the story rather than giving the audience the opportunity to experience the story,” he said, zipping his lips with his fingers for dramatic impact.

The film will release in cinemas in the UAE on October 5. Read the full interview in Gulf News tabloid! soon.
