Samsung SHRT Film Cntst, back for a third year in collaboration with Dubai International Film Festival, is now accepting entries.

Entries, submitted through diff.ae/samsung, must be original films of any length, genre and style, which tell compelling stories. Submissions are open until November 7.

Ten shortlisted participants will be given a Samsung device to shoot their short films under the mentorship of Zinzana director Majid Al Ansari. Initially, participants were to use a Galaxy Note 7, but after news on Tuesday that the Galaxy Note 7 replacement phones have been deemed unsafe — this following a recall of 2.5 million original models in September due to reports of batteries exploding and phones catching fire — a representative for the competition informed tabloid! that contestants will be given an as-yet unspecified Samsung device.

“Over the years, with advancements in camera and sound technology, we at Samsung have been supporting such talent not only with the freedom of mobility and professional-quality equipment, but also an opportunity to unleash the full potential of their creativity,” said Ali Ahmed, the head of brand management at Samsung Gulf Electronics.

The finished films will be screened at the 13th edition of Dubai International Film Festival, which takes place December 7-14 at Madinat Jumeirah. The winner will have the opportunity to fly to France and screen their film at Short Film Corner at the 70th edition of the Cannes Film Festival, which takes place May 17-28.

“We are excited to collaborate with Samsung for the third year to recognise, encourage and nurture the next generation of creatives from the UAE … We look forward to this competition and the new talents that may be gracing future editions of DIFF,” said Shivani Pandya, managing director of Diff.
