Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty found herself in the centre of a social media storm when she mistook George Orwell’s novel Animal Farm, about the Russian Revolution, for a children’s book.

An Indian daily asked the actress her thoughts on whether characters from popular culture should be included in the school syllabus in India and she was quoted as saying:

“I think having books like Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter as part of the syllabus is a great move because it cultivates imagination and creativity at a young age. I thinks books like Little Women would also encourage respect towards women at a young age. Even Animal Farm should be included as it will teach the little ones to love and care for animals.”

Her faux pas triggered a series of mocking tweets directed at the actress and #ShilpaShettyReviews has been trending since.

Mocking tweets such as “Fifty Shades of Grey is an amazing colouring book. Children will love it”#ShilpaShettyReviews’ and “To Kill A Mockingbird is a great guide on ethical hunting. #ShilpaShettyReviews” are some of the scathing tweets that are doing the rounds.

The actress hasn’t responded to the trolls on her Twitter account and has been posting pictures of herself flaunting her fashion choices and hair colour instead.
