Dubai: Zayn Malik’s fanbase might have broken the internet as they mourn the singer’s departure from One Direction, currently the world’s biggest band, but pop star Kylie Minogue says she completely understands what he’s going through.

“Fame isn’t for everyone,” said Minogue on Thursday, speaking exclusively to tabloid!. “There is a lot of wonderful things that come with that, but there are other things.

“It’s like work,” she added. “Everyone wants a day off from work sometimes. And if you’re a member of One Direction, there’s no day off.”

Minogue was preparing for her UAE stage return with a performance at the Dubai World Cup, the world’s richest horse race, on Saturday.

“If I was a 15-year-old, I wouldn’t want any member of One Direction to leave. But good for him if he wants to pursue other things,” she said.

Malik’s sudden departure from the band, before they make their UAE debut on April 4 in Dubai, has sent shockwaves through One Direction’s loyal fanbase in the region, as well as around the world.

“There’s an ebb and flow to everything. A band is a living, breathing thing… people with real lives and desires that might not always fit into the schedule of a band,” Minogue said, adding that she remained hopeful for Malik’s return.

“Who knows if he will be gone forever,” she said.

The 46-year-old recently appeared with One Direction in a star-studded charity video by BBC Music, a rendition of the Beach Boys classic God Only Knows.

All set to take the stage at the end of the final race at the Dubai World Cup on Saturday, she said her performance will be an adaptation of her current Kiss Me Once tour, “with a lot more hits”.
