Johnny Marr has launched a scathing attack on the scalpers who sell Record Store Day purchases online at an inflated price.

Marr branded them “eBay tossers” after the former Smiths guitarist was aggrieved to find the seven-inch he put out for this year’s event — a cover of Depeche Mode’s I Feel You, backed with a live version of his former group’s Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want — selling for up to $50 (Dh183.6) on the auction site.

On Twitter, Marr wrote: “I’ll try to do an extra run of I Feel You 7” singles so those who wanted it but didn’t get it don’t get ripped by the EBay tossers.” He added: “Do not pay inflated prices for I Feel You on eBay. It’s a rip off & not in the spirit of RSD #screwthetouts [sic]”.

Record Store has become synonymous with eBay hawkers in recent years. This year, limited editions of Paul McCartney’s Sweet Thrash 12” were being sold for over $850, whereas Brand New’s Deja Entendu double LP fetched almost $400.

Marr recently performed with Paul Weller for a Teenage Cancer Trust gig at the Royal Albert Hall in March. He told NME that there was the possibility the two could continue working together: “We’d love to do it. We’ll do a single together at some point, definitely.”
