Karachi: Hindus in Pakistan are happy to see justice Rana Bhagwandas has become the acting chief justice of Pakistan.

Justice Bhagwandas is the first Hindu and second non-Muslim judge in the country to reach the judiciary's top position, after taking the oath of office yesterday.

Hindus here, however, believe that his elevation would not solve their problems.

"We are definitely happy with his appointment, but he cannot solve the problems of the Hindu community, which is actually the responsibility of the government," said a former Member of National Assembly, Khtoomal, of the Pakistan Peoples Party.

Khtoomal claimed that Hindus are ignored on many fronts in spite of Pakistan's Constitution providing equal rights to its citizen.

Surendar Valasai, a journalist, was quoted by a local daily as saying, "A minority judge would never be able to act in the same manner as a Muslim judge in Pakistani society and in fact, they would have certain reservations while addressing Hindu issues."
