While we’re busy ogling at smartphones over Dh2K, there was a new device that we missed. Meet the Moto G5.

Let’s start with how it looks. The phone is slightly shorter than most of the other devices you’re probably used to seeing at 144.3mm. It weighs next to nothing too at 144.5gm. The majority of it is wrapped in aluminium, which gives it a solid premium feel despite being light. The screen is a bit smaller at 5-inches thought it is a 1080p Full HD display.

The device can hold two SIM cards and a microSD simultaneously, has an amazing fingerprint sensor at the bottom front of the phone and runs the latest Android 7.0 Nougat.

Once again, to remind you guys, it’s priced at Dh699. (That’s very good so far, considering its features)

Here’s a quick rundown of the tech powering it, skip this paragraph if it’s too technical. It is powered by an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 processor.  3GB of RAM and 16GB of memory, you can up your storage to 128GB with a microSD card as well. The storage options aren’t very impressive, so I would suggest you keep this phone light as possible to keep it running smoothly.

While its storage options disappointed me, the camera impressed me. Honestly. The cameras on this device was a pleasant surprise.

The rear camera is a 13MP wonder, packed with autofocus, LED flash and digital zoom features.

Navigating through the camera you would notice several software functionalities similar to its big brother the Moto Z. This including barcode scanning, HDR and 1080p full-HD video recording 30fps.

The front-facing camera is a 5MP, wide-angle lens with an inbuilt screen-flash for your late night selfies in the dark.

Since we’re on the topic of pleasant surprises, let’s touch on the fingerprint sensor. It is easily accessible, large, incredibly responsive, and can rival the sensors found in its more expensive counterparts.

Lastly, the battery. The Moto G uses a 2800mAh removable battery. While this number seems small, remember that you’re going to have a processor that doesn’t demand much power and a smaller screen. The Moto G will easily give you over a day’s worth of usage.

To wrap it up, there are three amazing reasons to buy this device. It’s incredibly affordable, its camera is quite good, and the inclusion of the fingerprint sensor and metallic finish makes the phone feel a bit more premium than it is.

That being said, here’s what might not like. Its aluminium and plastic body is easily prone to scratches – so wrap it up in a clear case or just be careful. Its processor isn’t the quickest and its memory would fill up quite fast, but then again it depends on how you use it.

PS: (Use the Google Photos app to back up your media and regularly free space on your device)

It’s new, fresh, running the latest tech for the price-class and doesn’t cost you half a month’s rent.
