While the iPhone X (Ten) messed up iPhone continuity, the upcoming devices in September could be called the iPhone 9 or the iPhone 11? Perhaps the iPhone XII, who knows.

Regardless of what it could be called, here’s what we know so far based on leaks and rumours out there.

To summarize the below, There could be three 2018 iPhone models: a 5.8-inch, a 6.5-inch (both with OLED displays) and a new budget model that would be a 6.1-inch LCD iPhone.

The budget 6.1-Inch device could have a single-lens rear camera, and aluminium frame, no 3D touch, and could cost between Dh2,500 to Dh3,000.

Display:

Apple could stick to the OLED display similar to that of the iPhone X. South Korean business news agency, The Investor, suggests that at least two devices released this year will sport OLED screens. In other news, reports from The Wall Street Journal shows us that Apple placed an order for 6-inch-plus panels from Japan Display. The correlates with KGI Securities that prepped us for a possible 6.1-inch budget iPhone 2018. 

While we reported earlier that the first iPhone X could be no more, come September, this year could also see the end of 4.7-inch devices. There are reports that claim Apple cancelled an order for 5.2-inch displays and it seems unlikely that we will see another 4.7-inch model.

Yes, there is a strong chance that all three will come with “The Notch” so prepare yourselves for that.

 

Design and colours:

At least one of the upcoming iPhones in 2018 could feature a metal back. The business news publication Nikkei Asian Review suggest that it would be the 6.1-inch iPhone, and it would come in several different colours. I predict rose gold would be the UAE favourite (?). Always ready to support claims, KGI Securities chimed in with the news that the 6.1-inch iPhone will feature an aluminium frame.

Camera:

KGI Securities, once again, predicted that the 6.1-inch iPhone could feature a single-lens camera. This means that the feature we have all come to know and love, the TrueDepth 3D rear cameras would not make an appearance. Apple could opt to include a form of machine-learning tech for their Portrait Modes, similar to that found in the Google Pixel. Or not. There isn’t any reports on this yet.

Battery:

Won’t spend too much time on batteries, since we all know we’ll be charging them all the time anyway. However all three devices will enjoy a boost. Reports claim the 5.8-inch iPhone could feature a 2,900-3,00mAh battery (a good boost from the iPhone X’s 2,716 mAh battery). If the other models follow suit, we could expect a 10 per cent boost in power.

With regards to wireless charging, two devices could support it thanks to glass backs, however the 6.1-inch would not, due to its coloured metal-casing. Which is good news in a way, since there won’t be two glasses to replace if you drop you iPhone.

Pricing:

By now, the Apple star of 2018 is shaping up to be the pocket-bulging and wallet-friendly 6.1-inch iPhone. KGI Securities, very rightly, expects the 6.1-inch iPhone to account for around 50 per cent of the new iPhone line-up’s shipments, with sales remaining strong into 2019.

They add the device would cost anywhere between Dh2,500-Dh3,000, however parallel reports from AppleInsider suggest it would cost less, somewhere between Dh2,300 – Dh2,700.
