A dining experience at an establishment as prestigious as the Ritz Carlton and you expect grandeur, sumptuous meals by world-renowned chefs and surroundings that transport you to another world of serenity and succour. Well, this was the opposite.

Just kidding, of course. The Ritz’s Ramadan offerings for iftar and suhour are indeed an experience right out of the Arabian nights stories. On entering the grand hall of the Mamemo Majlis that has been lovingly transformed into a diner’s paradise, there are various images of old Dubai, which immediately give patrons the impression that they are about to travel to another time. There are images of the creek and the desert, stunning photographs that really give a feel of the old Middle East and the traditions that can still be found today.

The seating arrangements were comfortable and encourage mixing with other people if you’re in a small group. Otherwise it’s perfect for families and large groups. Service was a bit slow and it took a while to get the attention of the many waiters and waitresses. But this didn’t matter when it came to the food as it was all presented beautifully in a separate room. There was a wonderful mix of food from all over the Middle East, with traditional Ramadan dishes such as lamb ouzi and delicious soups such as lentil and harira. There were various mezze such as kibbeh, and an array of mains dishes such as chicken tagine. There really were so many dishes that there was no way we could try them all. There was also a section with Indian food, which had dhal and butter chicken.

There were many chefs on hand to help out and to ask questions about the food on show. It was indeed a sumptuous affair and as everyone munched together in the comforting rumblings of happy hordes, the live band brought yet another touch of Arabia with traditional singing that enhanced the atmosphere.

The desserts included ice cream, kunafa, baklava and various cakes and sweets. It was a perfectly sweet ending for the meal and washing down with the many smoothies on offer and later a coffee, the feeling was one of comfort and peace.

This is definitely an iftar to try at least once with family and friends and will have you remembering the real reason to celebrate Ramadan surrounded by loved ones.
