Abu Dhabi: Over 1,300 exhibitors from 65 countries welcomed people to the 27th Abu Dhabi International Book Fair (ADIBF) at Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (Adnec) on Wednesday.

Taking over a staggering 35,000 square metres at Adnec, the event, which will run until May 2, will feature over 800 activities, discussions and seminars as well as thousands of books from around the world that would appeal to people of all ages and backgrounds.

Organised by the Abu Dhabi Tourism and Culture Authority (TCA Abu Dhabi), the event was inaugurated by Lt-General Shaikh Saif Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, followed by a ceremony at the fair’s Guest of Honour’s pavilion, China.

Speaking to Gulf News, Saif Saeed Gobash, director-general of TCA Abu Dhabi, said, “Abu Dhabi plays an important role in supporting literature, publishing and culture. ADIBF is a platform for all writers, intellectuals and professionals in the fields of publishing, digital media and e-services from all over the world. It is also an important opportunity for us to present them with information about Emirati literary products by playing host to the most prominent writers, intellectuals and publishing houses in the UAE.

“In that light, ADIBF also brings some of the leading international literary and intellectual talents together through a special ceremony honouring the winners of the International Prize for Arabic Fiction (IPAF) and Shaikh Zayed Book Award that coincides with the book fair, which further consolidates Abu Dhabi’s stature as a leading international cultural destination.”

Gobash went on to say, TCA Abu Dhabi hopes to establish Abu Dhabi as one of the major global tourist destinations considering what it has to offer to the world, from the diverse and high standard tourist services to the rich culture, heritage, traditions, ancient monuments and attractive modern features.

The event’s comprehensive programme ranges from professional, cultural and creative events to book signings and extensive cookery and children’s programmes.
