A three-day event to celebrate Kerala’s performing arts, some centuries old, will be held at an event called Utsavam from December 1 to 3 at the GEMS Wellington International School in Dubai.

Mattannur Sankarankutty Marar, known as the master of chenda (a traditional Kerala drum), will lead the Thaayampaka, a rhythmic percussion ensemble, while a leading exponent of classical dance Mohiniyattam, Vinitha Nedungadi, will showcase art form, often referred to as the dance of the enchantress.

Kathakali, one of the most recognised classical theatre forms of Kerala, will also be performed by Kalamandalam Gopi, who has played all kinds of roles in a career spanning 40 plus years. Kathakali is known for its dramatic make-up, elaborate costumes and detailed gestures as much as for its combination of dance, music, poetry and histrionics.

Other artists performing at Utsavam include Kalamandalam Balasubramanian, Margi Vijayakumar, Pathiyoor Sankarankutty, Kottakkal Madhu, Kalamandalam Unnikrishnan, Kalamandalam Sankara Warrier, Mattannur Sreekanth and Mattannur Sreeraj.

Entry to the event is free. For a full schedule go to traditionslive.org.
