Dubai: Starting December 10, UAE residents can register to access the Smart-Gates at Dubai airports free-of-charge at Mirdif City Centre, the General Directorate of Residency and Foreign Affairs (GDRFA) has announced.

The Smart Gate, designed by Emaratech, is designed to ensure quick passenger clearance at the Dubai airports via smart card and biometric verification.

Once registered, travellers will avoid the long queues and crowds at passport control. Travellers need only spend eight to 12 seconds to clear the immigration process and can use either a passport, Emirates ID, Smart Gate card or even a QR barcode via the GDRFA DUBAI smartphone app.

There are no previous requirements necessary for the registration. Residents can register at the Mirdif City Centre booth by electronically submitting their passport information, fingerprints and eye scan.

Major Khalid Yousuf Al Yousuf, Director of the GDRFA’s Smart Gate Affairs, said: “The GDRFA, along with its strategic partner Emaratech, has given citizens and residents the chance to register for the Smart Gate function at the Dubai airports free of charge. We are aiming to decrease traffic at the passport control queues and to make traveling through the Dubai airports an efficient and hassle-free process.”

Thani Abdullah Al Zafein, General Manager and board member of Emaratech, said: “It is important for residents to be aware of the different options of going through the immigration process at the Dubai airports.”
