Abu Dhabi: Abu Dhabi Police have stepped up a campaign to curb the illegal practice of transporting gas cylinders in private or unlicensed vehicles.
Violators will be severely punished as the cylinders could explode in the event of a collision, police said.
Under the rules of safe gas cylinder transport, vehicles should be of a specific colour, have an open roof and be labelled with warning signs to alert others that the vehicle is carrying flammable material.
A fire extinguisher should also be at hand and must be checked regularly.
At a meeting held in Al Ain, the Traffic and Patrols Directorate at Abu Dhabi Police discussed safety rules for transporting gas cylinders and ways to curb illegal transport and trade in unlicensed or private vehicles.
The meeting was chaired by Major Mattar Mohammad Al Muhairi, acting chief of Al Ain traffic section. It was attended by representatives from Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (Adnoc) and the Civil Defence.
The police have intensified campaigns to detect unauthorised transport of gas cylinders in private or unlicensed vehicles.
The directorate also called upon companies and individuals not to deal with vendors, who violate the regulations and endanger their lives and the safety of others for monetary gain.
