Dubai: The luxury brand expects its high-end $6,000 (Dh22,000) smartphone — 88 Tauri — to be a sell-out as it is manufacturing only 1,947 limited-edition devices of eight colour variants to total 15,576 units.

Bob Hatefi, CEO of Tonino Lamborghini Mobile, said the number 1947 is to commemorate the birth year of the company’s founder Tonino Lamborghini.

The phone is a 4G Android phone and has a five-inch Full HD device and is powered by quad-core 2.3GHz processor, 3GB of RAM and 16/32/64GB internal storage capacity. It houses 20MP rear camera and 8MP front camera and support dual SIM cards.

It is made of stainless steel and hand-stitched calfskin leather. The steel will have anodised black, gold, or silver options, while the leather will be available in black, brown, red, orange and blue. Each handset has a unique device number and comes with two years warranty. The gold edition costs $6,500.

Despite the high price, it is not the most costliest phone in the world. The credit goes to UK-based craftsman Stuart Hughes’ Black Diamond iPhone 5 at $15.3 million.

The casing is made up of 24-carat gold while the home button consists of 26-carat black diamond and the Apple logo and the corners are made of white diamonds. The device is encrusted with 600 precious stones, out of which, 53 are housed in the Apple logo at the back.

The expensive iPhone 5 is owned by a Chinese businessman.

The 88 Tauri will be available in the UAE by February first week at select retail stores.

Hatefi said that the GCC contributes more than 20 per cent to the total sales.

The company’s last year’s model — Antares — was worth $4,000.

Hatefi said that the phone manufacturing process is quite complicated. The leather is from Italy, stainless steel is from Japan and the design is from Italy and some parts are assembled in Asia and Europe.

“We also make tailor made according to customers’ needs, and then the price can go up to $50,000. We do have two other models in the pipeline for this year. In the next two to three years we will have around four to six models. The R&D, design and development of a phone takes between 12-14 months,” he said.

The company spends between $10 million to $20 million on R&D on a single phone.
