Abu Dhabi: Al Ain-based Strata Manufacturing, Etihad Airways Engineering and Siemens revealed the region’s first 3D printed aircraft interior part- a plastic frame that surrounds media screens on Etihad Airways aircraft.

“We are extremely proud to announce the successful completion of our pilot project, which is a key step towards our goal of deploying 3D printing technology on live application,” said Badr Al Olama, CEO of Strata Manufacturing, while addressing media at Global Manufacturing and Industrialisation Summit in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday.

He said the technology has the potential to revolutionise the aerospace industry through innovation while also developing local knowledge and skills.

During the project, Siemens used its global expertise in industrial 3D printing to consult on the selection of materials, testing and the development of the manufacturing processes. Etihad Engineering was responsible for the part’s design and its certification for use in aviation. Strata 3D printed the part in their Al Ain factory using local partners VPS and D2M.

Siemens and Strata are also trying to work on the development of a three year joint road map for further industrialisation of 3D printing in the UAE and other parts of the region. Strata is also exploring the usage of 3D technology in a range of applications in aerostructures.

Strata manufactures components for Boeing and Airbus and is wholly owned by Mubadala Development Company.
