Dubai: Over 1,000 exhibitors from 46 countries will gather at the 18th edition of the Water, Energy, Technology and Environment Exhibition (Wetex 2016), which will see solar show being launched for the first time at the three-day event, to be kicked off in Dubai on October 4.

The event, to be held at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre and organised by the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa), will bring together experts in the energy, water and environment sectors and decision-makers and major investors in sustainable energy.

The number of exhibitors is anticipated to grow from 1,696 last year to 1,900 this year, an increase of 12 per cent. The exhibition, covering 63,700 square metres, will feature 18 national pavilions and 29 government organisations. Over 23,000 visitors are expected to attend the event, which will run until October 6.

“Wetex tackles the environmental issues and current challenges faced by most countries worldwide … we are working to provide a suitable environment for forging new partnerships and agreements and highlighting opportunities during the exhibition,” said Saeed Mohammad Al Tayer, managing director and chief executive of Dewa, at a press conference in Dubai on Monday.

“In addition to this, Wetex will review the latest developments and innovations by participants, which will reflect on the role of Dubai as a leading global hub, as well as demonstrating the mandate of the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050, which aims to turn Dubai into a green city,” he added.

Dewa will launch for the first time the Dubai Solar Show, part of Wetex, amid accelerated growth in the region’s solar energy sector. The show will attract major international companies in the solar energy sector.

Dubai is diversifying its energy mix. It aims to generate 7 per cent of its energy from clean energy sources by 2020. This figure is expected to reach 75 per cent by 2050.

Wetex will also include the Innovation Hall, which will showcase innovative products, promote scientific research and help devise innovative solutions in energy, water, environment and sustainability, Al Tayer said.

A number of initiatives related to sustainability and Shams Dubai will be announced during Wetex, according to Al Tayer.

The event will also include workshops to discuss challenges facing the energy sector and identify solutions for those.
