DUBAI: Seven years ago, on May 22, 2010, Florida man Laszlo Hanyecz offered to pay 10,000 bitcoins for two large Papa John’s pizzas.

“You can make the pizza yourself and bring it to my house or order it for me from a delivery place, but what I’m aiming for is getting food delivered in exchange for bitcoins where I don’t have to order or prepare it myself, kind of like ordering a ‘breakfast platter’ at a hotel or something, they just bring you something to eat and you’re happy!” Hanyecz posted to the Bitcoin Talk Forum.

It was a pretty good deal for the British man who took him up on the offer. Two pizzas set the buyer back $25; the 10,000 bitcoins were worth a total of $41.

It was the first purchase made with bitcoins. And thus the date is marked by bitcoin users as Bitcoin Pizza Day.

But today, the cryptocurrency is trading at an all-time high, with each worth $2,251.

Those 10,000 bitcoins are now worth $22.5 million.
