Dubai: The UAE National Flag is as symbolic as it gets. And the promoter behind the Flag Island project in Sharjah has already crossed that milestone by putting up the pole in 2012 right at the water’s edge and making sure it becomes a permanent landmark for the city.
Now, the Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq) has its designs, so to speak, on Phase 2 of the project. By early next year, the doors are to open for a permanent art gallery dedicated to the design and architectural fields. A 200-seat open-air theatre will also take its due place at the site, located opposite the Al Jazeera Park and the main government buildings.
“Right from the beginning the Flag Island project was meant to be a symbol of Sharjah’s past and a showcase to its future,” said Ahmad Obaid Al Qaseer, Chief Operating Officer at Shurooq. “Thus the features being built had to be in sync with this requirement ... and as such the land available would not have been able to accommodate anything else.
“The venue will host the main celebrations to mark the National Day as well as other official events organised by the Sharjah Government. At the same time, the venue will also be opened to the private sector wishing to organise events.”
