Dubai: Sharjah International Airport recorded its busiest three months ever in the first quarter of 2014 with 2.25 million passengers travelling through the airport.
The results, released on Sunday, reflect an 8 per cent increase in passenger traffic from January to March 2014 compared to the 2.08 million that travelled through in the same period last year.
“As the numbers clearly suggest, robust passenger traffic growth continues. This is being driven by the efficiency of procedures, excellent services, and the strategic location of Sharjah International Airport,” stated Ali Salim Al Midfa, Chairman of Sharjah Airport Authority.
The number of aircraft landing and taking off in the first quarter were 16,373. The airport handled 51,045 tonnes in air cargo, while sea-air cargo was 7,289 tonnes, according to Sharjah International.
Al Midfa stated that new routes and increased frequencies by Air Arabia, the biggest carrier at Sharjah International, contributed to the airports increase in figures.
Sharjah International will have an influx of passengers from May 1 until July 20 when select airlines temporarily shift to the airport due to scheduled runway repair work at Dubai International. The airlines include Jet Airways, SpiceJet and Cebu Pacific.
