Dubai: Flydubai will eventually move to Al Maktoum International at Dubai World Central (DWC), Shaikh Ahmad Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President of Dubai Civil Aviation, Chairman and Chief Executive of Emirates airline and Group and Chairman of flydubai, said Wednesday.

Flydubai has previously avoided confirming it will one-day move to the new airport, despite it being widely spoken of among Dubai's senior aviation executives and officials for over 18 months.

But on Wednesday, Chairman Shaikh Ahmad confirmed the airline would be shifted to DWC from its current base at Dubai International’s Terminal 2.

“We’re slowly moving flydubai to that side,” he told reporters at an aviation exhibition in Dubai.

Shaikh Ahmad, who was answering questions about the expansion of DWC, did not say when the government-owned airline would move.

DWC is Dubai’s future mega-hub with a slated capacity to one day handle as many as 240 million passengers a year. It is currently capable of handling up to 7 million passengers a year.

On Monday, Dubai Airports Chief Executive Paul Griffiths told Gulf News the majority of flydubai operations will be moved to DWC by 2020.

In November 2014, Emirates President Tim Clark said: “Flydubai will start moving down to DWC” to free up space for other airlines to move into Terminal 2, which is currently almost exclusively used by flydubai.

Flydubai launched new operations from DWC in October 2015, however it continues to maintain existing services at Dubai International.
