Dubai: Emirates SkyCargo said on Tuesday it has carried 55,246 tonnes of temperature sensitive goods since it moved operations to Al Maktoum International at Dubai World Central (DWC) on May 1.

Goods include perishable products such as fruit, vegetables, flowers, fresh meat as well as pharmaceuticals.

The freighter terminal at DWC has an advanced storage systems and a perishable area designed to handle around 140,000 tonnes of cargo a year, said the cargo division of Emirates.

Emirates permanently shifted its SkyCargo operations to Dubai’s newest airport in the second quarter, however, continues passenger operations at Dubai International.

Emirates use trucks to transport cargo between the two airports.

In 2013, the freight division of Emirates handled more than 313,000 tonnes of time and temperature sensitive goods on its freighters and in the belly hold of its passenger aircraft, according to Tuesday’s statement.

SkyCargo carried a total of 2.1 million tonnes of cargo last year bringing in Dh10.3 billion revenue, the cargo division said in January.

SkyCargo has a fleet of 13 freighters; 11 Boeing 77F Freighters and two Boeing 747-400 ERFs.
