Dubai: Etihad Airways’ future home at Abu Dhabi International Airport, the under construction Midfield Terminal Building, will be more than two thirds complete by the end of the year.

“Currently, the whole project is 55 per cent complete and it is expected to be 70 per cent complete by the end of 2015,” stated Ali Majed Al Mansoori, Chairman of operator Abu Dhabi Airports, in an emailed statement on Saturday.

In March, Al Mansoori told Gulf News the terminal would be between 60 and 65 per cent complete by the end of year.

Construction of the terminal recently reached a new milestone with a team of specialists starting the removal of temporary roof supports, the Abu Dhabi Airports statement also said.

In the first of nine de-props, a team of 45 specialists have removed 30 temporary supports that were used to construct the roof. The removal of the temporary supports will be completed by February 2016, Abu Dhabi Airports said, making the roof a totally free-standing structure.

Originally designed to meet growing demand, the Midfield Terminal, capable of handling 30 million passengers a year. will accommodate Etihad Airways and the several airlines it holds stakes in that fly to Abu Dhabi with other airlines to fly from existing terminal. The new terminal is being built at a cost of Dh10.8 billion by a three-way joint venture between Dubai-listed Arabtec, Greece's Consolidated Contractors Company and Turkey’s TAV.
