I’ve recently booked a long flight to Australia. What dietary considerations should I take to make the trip as comfortable as possible?

Before flight

During the day of your flight, be on a light diet. This should be preferably void of red meat, boiled eggs, fried food and white flour products. If you don’t have salads regularly, avoid this as well. Fruits (go for those that are not too acidic or sweet), well cooked chicken or fish (boiled), vegetables (less potatoes, onions and broccoli) are recommended.

During flight

Stay away from cold beverages such as sodas. Biscuits and salted and spiced nuts may not be good choices either. Breads, sandwiches and chocolates are also to be avoided. Drink more plain water and move around every hour, especially during long flights.

First 24 hours after landing

Wait it out for a day for the tiredness and jet lag to wear off before indulging in those local delicacies. After landing, the best food options are soups and non-acidic fruits. Avoid bottled juices, especially on the first day. Moderation is key to stabilising your digestion and building an appetite. Ayurveda also recommends a warm water shower to build up that appetite as well. All after a good refreshing sleep, of course.
