Doctors from the urology department at Dubai Hospital succeeded in saving the life of a 28-year-old patient by removing a large tumour from her kidney in a highly complicated surgery. The complexity of the surgery was due to the tumour affecting her liver and adjacent structure, in addition to a large malignant thrombus extending into the inferior vena cava.

Dr Salam Al Hasani, Consultant Urologist and Assistant Professor at Dubai Hospital, said the patient was suffering from great pain in her stomach and back and had blood in her urine.

The patient was referred to Dubai Hospital due to the advancement of her case and because the tumour was extending into the inferior vena cava.

“The patient was run through different institutes within the UAE and her home country but unfortunately she was told that her case was too complicated and required a good urology centre with proper facilities,” he said. “Upon evaluation of the patient, we found that she has a huge right renal tumour invading the liver and adjacent structures in addition to a large malignant thrombus extending into the inferior vena cava.”

Al Hasani said that a team was formed to conduct a four-hour surgery where the whole tumour was removed in addition to the malignant thrombus from the inferior vena cava.

He said this surgery, which is considered to be rare and complicated, was conducted successfully without any complications and the patient was discharged after a few days.
