In a bid to provide life-saving treatment for patients in critical care, Dubai Health Authority (DHA) has provided the latest smart systems and expanded the Emergency and Trauma Centre at Rashid Hospital, making it the biggest emergency department in the country.
One of the latest developments made by the authority’s IT department is its Salama Project, which links DHA electronic medical records system with the ambulances from the Dubai Corporation for Ambulance Service.
Dr Victor Butros, Consultant and Head of Emergency Department, says that by linking Salama with the ambulances, paramedics would be able to notify the emergency department with the patient’s condition before they arrive at the hospital. This information will be displayed on a screen, allowing doctors and nurses to prepare accordingly to meet the patient’s treatment needs prior to their arrival. This will allow for optimal treatment of patients who arrive to the hospital in critical condition.
DHA has also expanded Rashid Hospital’s trauma centre to include two floors with a capacity 159 beds. On the second floor, there are an additional 66 beds designated for intensive care specialties, including internal medicine, neurosurgery and general surgery. This represents an increase of 50 per cent of intensive care beds.
The third floor will have 93 beds for general surgery, specialised surgeries and fractures and other treatments.
The expansion of Rashid Hospital’s trauma centre will better help cater to the 500 to 600 cases the hospital receives each day.
New specialisations
New medical specialisations have also been added as part of the expansion, including hand, liver and spine surgery, bone fractures and bariatric surgery. These specialisations are part of Rashid Hospital’s expansion in the field of general surgery.
High-quality technology has also been added to the smart beds, tracking the status of immobile patients to avoid cases of falling out of the bed — one of the indicators of excellence and patients’ safety in the hospital.
This high-quality technology also keeps the head of stroke patients at a 30-degree angle. It ensures inline stabilisation for patients with spinal injuries. This position ensures safe and healthy position for various patients according to his or her condition.The expansion and new services will support DHA’s medical tourism plans.
Burns and Plastic Surgery Unit opened
Earlier last year, DHA also inaugurated a Burns and Plastic surgery unit (Ward 23) at Rashid Hospital.
The new unit, which is considered a one-of-a-kind specialised burns and plastic surgery unit in the region, will cater to burn victims including those who are in a critical condition with its ten rooms that are equipped with a surgery room, five individual rooms and three intensive care rooms.
The ward also includes a hydrology room. Additionally, the ward’s new state-of-the-art surgery room has a laminar flow cleanroom — a system that ensures the air is continuously sterilised.
