Chronic sleep deprivation, which could be due to staying up late and waking up early and increasing use of phones and tablets late into the night, poses serious health risks to children and adults. However, according to a study presented at the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology, even short periods of sleep deprivation in teens could raise their risk for depression and addiction. The study was conducted by researchers from the University of Pittsburgh on 35 participants, aged 11.5–15 years.

Amniotic fluid can now be harvested

Scientists from Lund University in Sweden have developed a multistep method including a unique collection device and new cell harvesting and processing techniques, which enable amniotic fluid to be safely harvested for large numbers of cells.

Amniotic fluid, the protective liquid surrounding an unborn baby, is discarded as medical waste during caesarean section deliveries. However, increasing evidence suggests the fluid is a source of valuable biological material, including stem cells with the potential for use in cell therapy and regenerative medicine.

Type 2 diabetes remission closely linked to significant weight loss

An intensive low calorie diet-based weight management programme delivered entirely in primary care can put your type 2 diabetes into remission, suggests a trial funded by Diabetes UK.

According to researchers from the University of Glasgow, almost 9 in 10 participants who lost more than 15kg on the programme were able to put their condition into remission.

The findings were published in the Lancet.
