The CEO of Dubai Hospital and Chairman of the National Transplant Committee discussed the developmental plan of the organ transplantation programme in the UAE earlier this week during a meeting held at Dubai Hospital.
Dr Ali Obaidli was received by the CEO of Dubai Hospital, Dr Abdulrahman Al Jasmi, who briefed Dr Al Obaidli on the latest developments in the transplant programme at Dubai Hospital, especially with regard to renal transplantation.

Dr Obaidli accompanied a European delegation from the University of Barcelona in Spain to learn more about their organ donation programme and establish a similar plan.

Dr Obaidli said it is important to establish such a programme in the UAE as more than 600 people in the country suffer from kidney failure annually, despite the hospital’s efforts to provide them with the necessary treatment.
Dr Al Jasmi commended this step, as more than 40 patients out of the 260 patients on kidney dialysis at Dubai Hospital need a transplant.

Legal structures

Dr Jasmi added that Decree No 5 for the year 2016 regarding organ transplantation has drafted the legislative structure for the implementation of the organ transplant programme. At the end of the visit, Dr Al Jasmi gifted Dr Obaidli a DHA shield in recognition of his and his team’s efforts in spreading awareness about organ transplantation in the country and alleviating the suffering of hundreds of patients and their families in line with the directives of the government.

As per 2016 statistics, Dubai hospital performed about 33,000 dialysis sessions for about 250 patients. Of these, diabetics make up 45-48 per cent of the total number of patients on dialysis. In 2017, the hospital performed about 35,337 dialysis sessions for about 260 patients. Of these, 45-48 per cent were diabetic.
