Dubai Police educating tourists

Dubai: Dubai Police and Emirates airline have joined hands to produce a video introducing the UAE’s culture and traditions and start showing it to tourists on inbound flights from next month.

Brigadier Mohammad Rashid Bin Sari Al Muhairi, deputy director of Criminal Investigation Department of Dubai Police, said the video will be part of an awareness campaign to educate tourists about the traditions and what to do if they face trouble.

“With millions of tourists visiting Dubai, they need to know about our culture and traditions. Emiratis and residents will be part of our campaign too as they should know how to deal with tourists,” Brigadier Al Muhairi said.

The short video will contain guidance and instructions on the police channels and whom to contact in case of emergencies and problems.

“Tourists can contact Dubai Police round the clock if they face any problem and we can help them,” he added.

The campaign under the title ‘Security and Happiness in House of Zayed’ will start on December 1 and will be run until the end of March 2018. The campaign will include meeting tourists coming on-board ships in Rashid Port and distributing flyers to passengers.

“We will organise sessions for tour guides who are in direct touch with tourists to help them explain to the visitors the traditions and what to do if they face trouble.”

Brigadier Al Muhairi said they received 1,100 calls from tourists in the first six months of this year regarding different enquiries and problems.

“Among them were 700 complaints about losing items or problems with hotels or car rental offices,” he said.

In a recent case, Dubai Police helped a Saudi tourist who had a problem with a hotel in Dubai and police made the hotel return the money to the tourist because he was right.

“Tourists can email us about anything even if they have left the country. Recently, we returned a stolen phone to a Spanish tourist though she discovered the robbery only after going back to her country. We sent the phone to her after arresting the thief.”
