Dubai: A man has been arrested for smuggling hundreds of kilograms of illicit drugs hidden inside rolls of imported textiles, Dubai Police said on Thursday.

Brigadier Eid Mohammad Thani Hareb, director of the Anti-Narcotic Department, said the man had been smuggling illegal painkillers with the help of his brother, who is in their home country in Asia, to smuggle by wrapping them inside rolls of textiles.

“The pair were professional by hiding the drugs inside the rolls. It is a rare method of smuggling drugs by the suspect who is outside the country. His brother was using a hotel apartment to store the rolls and supplying the drugs to other drug dealers to sell them inside the country,” Brig Hareb said.

Police seized 283kg of illegal painkillers and 20kg of crystal meth.

The police arrested the suspect while he was unloading the rolls at the hotel apartment.

“The suspect was importing the rolls of textiles from his home country as cover but his main business was promoting drugs,” Brig Hareb added.

Police monitored the suspect until they arrested him under the directions of Major-General Khalil Ebrahim Al Mansouri, Assistant Commander-in-Chief of Dubai Police for Criminal Investigation Affairs.

The suspect has been referred to the Public Prosecution after he was charged with possessing drugs for the purpose of trafficking.
